Week 10 CMT Style Problem - 3rd Grade

The Science Fair

Three elementary schools are planning a science fair, which will be held in a multi-purpose room of one of the schools. Space in the multi-purpose room will be allocated to each school according to the number of students in the school: the more students, the more space given to that school.

Jackson School has about 500 students. Kennedy School has about 200 students. Martin Luther King School has about 300 students.

The rectangle below represents the multi-purpose room where the science fair will be held. Show the amount of space each school should get based on each school’s population. Label each section J for Jackson School, K for Kennedy School, and M for Martin Luther King School.

Write a description of how you decided to divide the space. How do you know it is fair?
