Smoking

Nick smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day. Larry smokes 1 1/2 packs a day. Sonia smokes 1 pack a day.

In each pack there are 20 cigarettes and cigarettes cost $5.00 a pack.

For our problems we will use the following data :


There are 365 days in a year.
There are 30 days in a month.
There are 7 days in a week.
There are 24 hours in a day.

  1. What is the cost of 3 cigarettes?

  2. How much does Larry spend in a week on cigarettes?

    In a year?

  3. How many cigarettes does Nick smoke in an hour? (round to the nearest tenth)

  4. How many cigarettes does Sonia smoke in 6 months?

    How much does she spend on cigarettes a week?

  5. Who spends more on cigarettes Nick in 3 weeks or Sonia in 5 weeks?

  6. If Sonia lives 15 more years, how much will she spend on cigarettes?

  7. The life expectancy for someone born in Nick's birth year is 83. However for every cigarette you smoke you lose 20 minutes of your life. If Nick started smoking at age 15 and he is now 50, what is his new life expectancy?(Challenge Question)


By the way - The World Health Organization estimates that tobacco causes 5 million deaths each year. “If current smoking patterns continue, it will cause some 10 million deaths each year by 2025.
