RE: Annual Mathematics Meet Results
The city-wide Annual Mathematics Meet, involving teams of grade 7 & 8 Bridgeport middle school students, was held on the campus of the University of Bridgeport in the Dana Hall Lecture Room on May 12, 2011.
We had an exciting competition. The first place trophy and individual trophies were awarded to Thomas Hooker School. Second place was awarded to Park City Magnet and third place was awarded to Blackham School. The following schools were a few points behind the winning teams: Waltersville, High Horizons and Winthrop School. There was a tie this year for “Most Improved School” between Waltersville and Cross School who moved up 5 places in the standings from last year.
The top performing student at this year’s Mathematics Meet was Andrea Cuadrado, grade 8 student from Hooker School. Andrea answered all problems of the competition correctly. She was rewarded with a TI-83 graphing calculator. The following students also received a calculator for their outstanding performance: Adonnis Andrade (grade 8) Park City Magnet, Mikael Tessema (grade 7) Park City Magnet, Shakira Kim (grade 7) Dunbar School, Malik Marseille (grade 8) Winthrop School and Giovan Roque (grade 7) Waltersville School.
We would like to also recognize the following students from the winning team at Thomas Hooker School: William Waller, Stephanie Alvarez, Andres Trujillo, Franceine Welcome, Shannon Sanders and Andrea Cuadrado. This team was coached by their Numeracy Coach, Mr. Michael Sevigny.
In addition, we would like to congratulate the team from Batalla School: Tashmique Brown, Juanita Montoya, Athena Arce, Rose Polanco, Elizabeth Asiedo and Noami Cotto. These students faced the difficult decision of either participating in a field trip to the Ball Park at Harbor Yard or representing their school in the Math Meet. Their decision to represent their school in this event showed their unselfish character and loyalty to their school.
We also would like to thank Dr. Ricardo Rosa, Director of Mathematics; Ms. Kathy Flynn, Grants Coordinator; Ms. Ruth Garth, GEAR UP Program and the Board of Education for sponsoring this event. They provided the funding for transportation, trophies, snacks and awards.
Many thanks also go to Dr. Allen Cook and the University of Bridgeport, who provided us with the opportunity of conducting this event at Dana Hall. We enjoyed the use of an auditorium that had enough room to accommodate our 114 students.
The Mathematics Department (Dr. Ricardo Rosa, Pedro Vazquez, Margherita Lisi, Tracey Longway and I) appreciate the fine work and effort that every teacher provided in making this a very successful event.
Congratulations to all the winners, coaches, teachers, participants and sponsors!
Sincerely,
Herminio M. Planas
