The Garden Fence

Elizabeth has decided to plant a rectangular flower garden with 24 plants. The plants need to be 1 foot apart. She also knows that the rabbits like to eat young plants, so she has decided to put up a fence around her garden.



Elizabeth does not want to buy more fencing than she has to, and she thinks it might matter how she plants the garden. What do you think? How should Elizabeth plant her garden so she needs the least amount of fencing? Show your answer in pictures and in words.
