The Great Meddler and The Great Showman

Henry Bergh and P.T. Barnum

"....that any person who can commit an atrocity such as the one I complain of, is semi-barbarian in his instincts."
~Henry Bergh to the Barnum Museum

"Your arbitrary conduct, however, compelled my associates to send their reptiles to a neighboring state to be fed;.."
~P.T. Barnum to Henry Bergh, 1867

Henry Bergh, the founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and P.T. Barnum fought for years over Barnum's treatment of animals at his museum and his circus. But as the years went by, an affection grew between the two and Barnum began contributing to anticruelty societies calling himself "the Bergh of Bridgeport". In his will Barnum left $1000 for the erection of a memorial for Bergh which was unveiled October 1, 1897 at the entrance to Seaside Park. The statue is pictured shown to the right.
